The Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge is hosted by Long and Short Reviews. This week’s topic is: a new hobby I’m trying or would like to try.
I’ve actually made a commitment to teach myself how to crochet. If you know me, you know this is not my usual sort of creative endeavor. However, I have quite a few friends who either knit, crochet, or both. The more they talk about it, the more interested I get.
That and there’s this evil thing called Etsy that’s constantly showing me adorable crocheted dragons, fish, and THE CHILD (aka ‘baby Yoda’).
So, over the weekend, I splurged and spent twenty dollars on a beginner’s crochet kit on Amazon. Between that, YouTube, and this thing called Creativebug available through my local library, I think I’m going to give it a shot. Wish me luck.
What kind of new hobbies are you looking into this year?
Decorated sugar cookies have been calling to me. I’ve done cakes, but have never really gotten into the detail of royal icing and cookies. I have an Amazon list full of cookie tools that look like fun.

My mom always cut them out, frosted them, and put colored sprinkles on her sugar cookies. That’s about as far as her decorations went. They always tasted good though. Maybe one day you’ll use them?

I’d love to see a photo of crocheted Baby Yoda when you’ve finished that project! What a cool idea.

If I manage to make it that far, I’ll be sure to post a picture for you! I also want to make a sombrero for my kitten. LOL

Crocheting is remarkably simple, I promise. Now … knitting? That’s the spawn of Satan. I expect to see some of your creations online!

Hahaha! I heard something similar from a friend who crochets but can’t knit. And let’s hope! The kit ought to arrive soon and I’m kinda excited to start.

I’ve been crocheting since I was a kid, and I agree with Marianne… it’s SO much easier than knitting. I’m working on afghans for all the grandchildren right now. On the 3rd.. 3 more to go! My post is here: https://jhthomas.blogspot.com/2020/01/wednesday-weekly-blogging-challenge-new.html

I’m hoping you and M are right. Wow, go you! My boss’ mom made an afghan for my older girl’s baby shower and she still has it. (The kid in question will be 20 next month) They make amazing gifts.

Crocheting is a wonderful new hobby. My aunt gives a new crochet blanket to everyone in the family for graduations, weddings, etc. and it’s pretty much a rite of passage. Plus you can do it while you’re sitting somewhere and waiting or chatting, making time more productive.

I’m hoping it works for me, too! Aw, that’s really awesome that your aunt does that. You can never have too many blankets! And yes – so many of my friends listen to audiobooks while crocheting so that’s a plus.

I can’t get the return part right, where you add a loop/stitch and start going the way you came. It’s a mystery to me. My mother can crochet like nobody’s business. Me? Yeah, no. Good luck! I bet it turns out super great!

Bummer, but hopefully you’ll get the hang of it! But if not, there are plenty of other things out there to occupy your time, right?

My wife does plastic canvas. We have yarn coming out of our ears and she still buys more. https://pmprescott.blogspot.com/2020/01/wednesday-challenge-012220.html

That’s really cool! Hahaha… most knitters and crocheters are yarn hoarders, too.

My mom and grandmother were crocheters. I have several beautiful items they crocheted. But I never could get the hang of it, though I tried several times. Good luck! You’ll have to do a blog on how you did. Here’s my hobby blog https://www.tenastetler.com/lsrs-wednesdays-blog-challenge-1-20-2020-new-hobby-drones/

Aw, that’s a bummer but I’m glad you still reaped the rewards of their labor. I hope I can figure it out, too. Will gladly share my success (and failure) once I start!

My grandma taught me to crochet. I’d sit between her legs and she’d guide me. I remember I started out with the single chain stitch and I’d stitch and stitch, and then I’d rip it out and begin again. When I mastered that, we moved on to more types of stitches. Have fun! I hope you share your projects with us.

Gaming is my hobby this year. I’ve been dabbling but I’m really excited to focus on it and get better. I hear crocheting is a blast and that once you get the hang of it, it’s very therapeutic. Good luck with your new hobby!

Thanks, and you, too! My husband was a big gamer and my younger daughter is, too. It’s fascinating to me to see how far the games have come over the years. Especially in the case of things like Final Fantasy when I can remember FFV on Nintendo and being awful graphics-wise.

My mother did crochet for over twenty years and its a wonderful hobby to have. She did it absolutely everywhere, and always had a project tucked in her bag. Toys, baby clothes and blankets-a mountain of doilies. It’s not something I took on (my fingers cramp too much) but I love crochet. Good luck with yours!

Thank you! And I’m worried about my hands, too – carpal tunnel – but I’m hoping for the best!

Oh, I love crochet. I’m sticking with mine this year instead of starting a new hobby. A starter kit for beginners is a great place to start. You’ll be making THE CHILD in no time!
