Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge March 4, 2020

The Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge is hosted by Long and Short Reviews.  This week’s topic is: characters who remind me of myself and why. 

I’ve been saying this for years but Stephanie Plum.  And while no, I’ve never been handcuffed naked to my shower, I can still relate.  She has a well-meaning but overprotective mother, a crazy grandmother, and some pretty odd friends.  But the thing about Steph that I love the most and, that I hope I most reflect, is that she’s always exactly who she is.  Take it or leave it, here I am.  Plus, my hamster.

Orla Cadden from Followers by Megan Angelo.  Although Orla has a ton of flaws, she’s very loyal to her friends, even when they don’t deserve it.  She’s an aspiring novelist who rarely writes, and is often sucked up into other people’s business, often at the expense of her own.  Now, I’ve never been as submissive to my friends as Orla is to Floss for much of the novel, but I understand how easy it is to succumb to that stronger personality.  Plus, the way she holds onto her teenage crush for years and years resonated with me.  Yeah, she should have gotten on with her life, but I married my high school sweetheart, so I get why she couldn’t, too.

I know two isn’t many, but I tend to look for characters that aren’t like me when I read.  Why?  Because I read to escape and I have way too much me in real life, ya know?  Anyway, I’m anxious to see what literary figures the rest of you pull out of a hat.  Hopefully they’re ones I recognize so I can get to know you all a bit better.
