Jilted at the altar, small-town librarian Claire is forced to go on her romantic honeymoon in New York City alone. After enduring one too many meals for two as one, Claire invites a seemingly harmless little old lady to join her for afternoon tea at the Plaza.
Unbeknownst to Claire, said little old lady is actually a grand wizard, who bestows Claire with a magical amulet that makes her the sitting queen of the magical community. Claire is swept into the gilded world of New York City wizards – and a bitter power struggle for the throne. With the help of a cursed former prince, Claire must untangle this web of deception and find the magical community’s rightful leader before her “honeymoon” is over.
This was included free in Audible’s new Audible Plus catalogue. Since it was only a little over five hours of listening time, I took a chance and downloaded it.
Claire starts out being a bit naive and well, librarian-ish, for lack of a better term. I loved how she played to her strengths though and used her skills as a librarian to solve her problems and help Declan. The whole cast is both interesting and irritating, depending on the chapter, but that’s a good thing, too, since it leaves you wondering who is on what side.
I adored the narrator, Karissa Vacker, as well. She has a soothing and pleasant voice. Her southern accent is a nice addition to Claire’s voice, since she’s from Texas. I’d love to see a follow-up to this so I can find out what’s going on in Claire’s life.
