Friday Five Writing Prompts: September 10, 2021

This week’s prompts were: reign, grateful, soup, ghost, immune.

Also, I gave Zayne and Andrej the week off, so you get two of my other nuts, Travis and Ethan.

Travis dug around in the cupboard looking for something, anything to put in his stomach.  Ethan had warned him that they were getting low on groceries, but he’d been too immersed in his newest novel to really pay attention.

Note to self: listen to Ethan.

“Ah, there we go,” he said, grinning as he found a can of Campbell’s soup in the back of the pantry.

As grateful as he was to Ethan for trying to keep him alive, sometimes the creative forces overtook his senses, rendering him incapable of anything but writing.  The last few days had been exactly like that.  His muse had grabbed hold of him and refused to let go until her reign of creative terror was over.  E didn’t get it, but he didn’t need to, Travis supposed.  All he needed to do was endure.

Dumping the soup into a bowl, he stuck it into the microwave and started to heat it.

I’ll go to the store in the morning, he texted Ethan.  Promise

Sure you will, Ethan texted back.  It was almost as if Travis could hear his husband’s laughter carried along with the text.

His phone rang.  “Hello?”

“Travis,” Ethan said, his voice dripping with seriousness.

“Ethan,” Travis responded, drawing out the last syllable of Ethan’s name.  They played this game often and, just when Travis thought he was immune to Ethan’s stony faux contempt, it caught him off guard all over again.

“You still chasing the ghosts of novels past, or have you returned to the corporeal world for the time being?”

“I’ve got both feet solidly in the present,” Travis replied.  “But that will change as soon as I get some food in my belly and return to the lair of my muse.”

Ethan chuckled.  “Writers are so weird.”

“But I’m your weirdo,” Travis reminded him.

“God help me,” Ethan mock groaned.  “And don’t forget my Cheerios when you go to the store tomorrow, Murphy.”

“Right.  Cheerios,” Travis said.  “Let me add that to the list along with milk, sugar, and duct tape.”

“Do I want to know why you need duct tape,” Ethan asked.  “Or will it compromise my job with the White Pine Police Department?”

“I guess that depends on how you react when I fall asleep and forget to go to the grocery store in the morning,” Travis said with a laugh.

“You might want to add some alcohol to that list, Trav. I’m beginning to think I’m going to need a lot of it after I wake up.”

“Never,” Travis laughed.  “But um, just in case, I’ll add some beer to the list.”

“Going to need something stronger,” Ethan said.  “But beer will work.”

Travis turned when the microwave dinged.  “Dinner is ready, E, so I’ll let you get back to work.  I’ll probably still be up when you get home.”

“Or asleep on your keyboard like last night.”

“Yeah, yeah,” Travis muttered.  “See you in a few hours?”

“See you in a few hours,” Ethan confirmed before hanging up.

Travis took the soup out of the microwave and returned to the pantry in search of some crackers.  Finding them, he grabbed an entire sleeve and carried his meal back into his office.  As soon as his hands were free, he set an alarm on his phone so he wouldn’t forget to go into town for food.  Ethan was a decent human being who had more patience than most with Travis’ inherent flaws.  But, he had a distinct feeling that if he forgot or put off getting food for one more day, they’d be headed for divorce.  And that was not an option.

Food first, then words, he told himself.  In that order. He made a deal with his pushy muse wherein if she allowed him to eat now, he’d buy her Twizzlers and Starbucks in the morning.  It seemed to appease her because half an hour later, he was washing his bowl and heading back to finish this never-ending novel.

“Now,” he said, “time to get back to work.”

  1. Oooh! I love Ethan and Travis. Did I miss another with them? ! Do they crossover at the same police department as the other couple?

    1. Thank you so much! I don’t think I’ve posted about them here before, but I could be lying to you. 😀 No, they’re completely separate from the other two, but a crossover in the future is always possible. 🙂

  2. Thank goodness for Campbell’s soup! Seriously though- this was fun. For some reason I got the impression they were both home and texting/ calling each other from within the house, which made me smile, but then I read it again and maybe Ethan is not home?

    Anyway thanks for sharing 🙂

    1. I’m telling you. There’s a reason why I always have soup and ramen in the cupboard! Ah, yeah, I can see why you might think that, but no, Ethan was at work during the conversation. Although, my husband would text me from downstairs all the time.

Thanks for reading! I’m happy you enjoyed it. 🙂
