Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge May 15, 2019

wednesdaybloggingchallenge

The Wednesday Weekly Blogging Challenge is hosted by Long and Short Reviews.  This week’s topic is: favorite TV shows and why.

First, an update: For those of you who read my last Wednesday post, I mentioned that my husband was going through dialysis and waiting for a kidney transplant.  He got his new kidney on April 15th and is doing amazingly well.  This is also a huge part of why I’ve been missing from the mix the last several weeks.

Now, on to the fun stuff!

I never used to watch a whole lot of television and then I moved in with my then-boyfriend, now-husband.  He is a TV addict and, while I’m content to sit in the quiet and read, he has to have the TV on at all times.  By default, I wind up watching a lot of the shows he has on for whatever reason… and get hooked.

I’ll pare down the list and give you a few of the ones I have to watch, can’t miss.

Supernatural.

This is one of those shows my husband got me hooked on.  Some cable station would show several episodes every morning and I’d catch bits and pieces of it as I was getting the kids ready for school.  Finally, I got so curious that I gave in and binged the first seven seasons over the summer before season 8 started.  No regrets.  Why do I love it?  The supernatural elements are what drew me in.  Jensen Ackles made me stay.  And then Misha.  From the day I started watching, my husband kept saying, “Wait till you meet Cas.  I love Cas.”  And then, as I got farther in, it was, “Have you met Cas yet?”  Yeah, I agree, honey, I love Cas, too.

Killjoys.

Again, I have my husband’s love of Firefly to thank for this.  Syfy did a Firefly marathon many years ago, so I sat and watched with my husband because a) I love Nathan Fillion and b) was curious to see Adam Baldwin as something other than John Casey (have I mentioned I love Chuck?).  Sci-Fi can be hit or miss for me, but I fell in love with Firefly, so, when Syfy announced Killjoys, we were all in.  I swear, I love everyone on this show, but Johnny’s relationship with Lucy, the ship, is the best part of the whole thing.  Why do I love it?  Because it is action packed while still maintaining a sense of humor.  And well, Aaron Ashmore doesn’t hurt things either.

Common Law.

Sadly, this amazing show only got one season, which made no sense to me because USA had always been good about giving its shows a chance. Things like Fairly Legal and Covert Affairs were given several seasons even when they faltered.  This show made me laugh so much and fangirl so darn hard.  It even inspired me to start writing fanfic, heaven help AO3.  Why do I love it?  Wes and Travis act like an old married couple, constantly bickering and getting in each other’s way.  It didn’t help any that the entire plot of the show is these two homicide detectives being forced into couple’s counseling.  I swear, at times,  I think even the writers shipped these two.  I know I did.

Chuck.

Not sure what drew me to this show, but it’s one of the few things that I would stay up to watch.  As a bonus, both of our kids loved it, too, and it became a family thing to watch it every week together.  It spawned a few running jokes within the family, too.  Apparently, I had a bad habit of saying, “Poor Chuck” every time something went wrong.  And got mocked for it.  Still do, even though the show has been off the air for years.  Another was also a running joke on the show – that it’s ‘never safe in the car’.  Why did I like it?  It was a fun show that always made me laugh.  Zachary Levi was so bright and lovable as Chuck, and the entire cast worked together amazingly well.  Morgan was always my favorite though, and I know that’s definitely an unpopular opinion in the fandom.

Honorable mention: Friends.

My husband loved this show when it originally aired, but I don’t ever remember watching it.  However, when Netflix picked it up, BOTH of my children started watching it.  Matter of fact, they were competing to see who could finish it first.  Because of this, every day, I’d come home from work and my older child would be watching Friends in the living room.  They are both addicted now, along with my husband.  It really was a funny show and, although some stuff doesn’t quite hold up, a lot of it still does.  Bonus: Man with a Plan is basically Joey Tribiani grown up with children.  Matt LeBlanc has so many Joey moments in that show that you have to wonder if that’s his true personality or if he’s channeling it for that scene.

Okay, so I said I was going to keep this short and I lied.

Hah, sorry.  Had to get Johnny and D’avin in there one more time.  What are some of your favorites?  What do I need to add to my Netflix/Amazon Prime/DVD.com queue?

  1. I’m glad your husband’s kidney transplant went well.

Supernatural has had some amazing episodes. Which one has been your favourite so far? I loved the one that involved Sam and Dean ending up in our world where they were actors playing characters instead of real-life hunters. It had so many funny moments.

    My post.

    1. Thank you!

Oh god, I love all the meta episodes. The one where they go to the fan convention. The one where they meet Chuck, who is writing all the Supernatural novels. The one where they first meet The Trickster (Gabriel). The French Connection is the one you’re talking about, I think, and it was hilarious. That moment where Misha tweets out something about J2 getting him again… HE ACTUALLY TWEETED THAT. Talk about breaking the fourth wall.

      Obligatory:

  2. Supernatural and Killjoys.

I’ve seen the first episode of Killjoys, and it’s very high on my list of things that I really want to go back and watch if life ever slows down a little.

Supernatural, on the other hand, is one of several shows (GoT, The Walking Dead, Jane the Virgin, Stranger Things) that I’m really afraid to start watching because I’m pretty sure that I’ll suddenly look up at the end of the last episode and realize that the boys are grown and I have a beard down to my knees and oh my god, wasn’t I supposed to show up for my job???

    1. Killjoys is well worth the watch! And I think there are only 12 or so episodes per season, so not as bad as network TV with their 24 or more episodes.

ROFL @ Supernatural. Yeah, that very well could happen! Although, it is ending next season, so that’s a plus? 🙂

      Thanks for stopping by!

    1. That’s funny because most of these I only watch because of my husband! But thank you very much, it’s been a relief to have him doing so well so quickly.

  4. Well … you already visited my post, so you know my suggestions 😉

Supernatural is one I’ve watched in passing when my kid has it on. I’ve seen, I think, the first 7 seasons. But then she stopped to take a break, so … so did I, lol. Maybe “Common Law” was cancelled because no one heard of it? I haven’t and I LOVE both actors. Now I’m bummed… sigh.

    Thanks for visiting earlier 🙂

    1. Hah, truth. 🙂

I think a lot of people started watching Supernatural and drifted away for whatever reason. You’re probably right about Common Law though. It was where I first saw Warren Kole and Michael Ealy and I adore them both now. What’s worse is it isn’t even streaming anywhere, although I’ve found a few episodes on YouTube. 🙂

Oh, and on the subject of Mr Blue Eyes and your theme of cancelled shows… Almost Human was amazing and it shouldn’t have been cancelled after one season either. GRR.

    1. Thanks so much! We’re very happy he’s doing so well.

Like I told Marianne, I think a lot of people drift away from Supernatural. A lot find their way back, some never do. It’s a weird show in that way.

    1. Thank you so much! And just knowing that he’s healthier now helps. 🙂

Let me tell you, I was reluctant to get hooked on Killjoys, but from the first episode, I was all in. Love Johnny’s relationship with Dutch, his brother, Lucy – everyone. Oh yes, John Winchester! He was great. Cas is my favorite though.

  6. Wonderful on the transplant. I’m glad to hear it went well.
I’ve watched a handful of Supernatural and I liked it. I just don’t get back to it often. I’ve wanted to watch Killjoys. Think I might have to binge it. 🙂

I love Supernatural, even with as ridiculous as it’s gotten lately. I think you’d enjoy Killjoys. It’s so much fun!
